5 Creative Holiday Party Ideas

With nine months of the year behind us, we’re all looking forward to the upcoming holiday season. Whether you have a special occasion to celebrate or just want to have a fun time with friends, family or coworkers, here are five creative ideas to help you plan a party this holiday season – in person or virtually!

  1. Choose a favorite decade as a theme.

If you’ve been dreaming of the good ‘ole days, then go back in time by throwing a decade-themed party. Challenge guests to dress up in the fashions of that decade and create a playlist with music from that time period. Ask guests to share photos of themselves from way back when and create a slideshow to play during the party.

  1. Incorporate international holiday traditions.

America is known as the melting pot of cultures, languages and traditions. If you have friends or coworkers who were born abroad, throw a party that will encourage them to share foods, music and traditions from their background. You could even play games unique to their culture.

  1. Have a cookie swap instead of a gift exchange.

As we near the end of 2020, many Americans are out of a job and may struggle to purchase gifts. Consider having a cookie swap instead of a gift exchange. Ask guests to bake a dozen or two of their favorite cookies and bring a platter to the party.

  1. Throw a pajama party.

No, pajama parties aren’t just for kids. Hold a contest with the following categories: Funniest Pajama Outfit, Best Slippers, Most Creative, Most Comfy and Most Colorful. Ask guests to bring pajama-themed dessert, play truth or dare (if you dare!), and have a pillow fight.

  1. Build your party theme around a movie.

Your film buff friends will be unable to resist an invitation to a film-themed holiday party. Decorate the space with movie-themed decorations, ask guests to dress up as their favorite character, and play a movie trivia game to test guests’ knowledge of the film.

Here are just a few films to consider: Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, Jurassic Park, Peter Pan, Lord of the Rings, Shrek, The Lion King, Titanic, Batman and Spiderman.
