Everything You Need to Plan a Picnic

A picnic is a great way to connect with family, friends, and coworkers — for any occasion, and in every season. Whether you’re planning a simple friends-only picnic or a large corporate picnic, we’ve got a checklist to make sure the picnic is a success.

1. Set a date and time.
Decide whether you’d like to have the picnic on a weekday or during the weekend. Outdoor spaces tend to be less crowded during the weekdays, but most people have more availability on the weekend. Sunday is a great day for a picnic regardless of the occasion or the location.

2. Choose a location.
San Diego is a great place to have a picnic. The weather is beautiful year round, with many parks and beaches to choose from. A few places to consider include the Mission Bay Area, Downtown and Southward Parks, NTC at Liberty Station, Miramar/Mesa, East County parks and Central San Diego. Feel free to reach out to Picnic People for picnic location recommendations.

3. Determine guest count.
Will your picnic be adults only or will it include kids and teens? Figure out how many people you’ll be inviting and determine the age range. Consider hiring a caterer or picnic planner for help with rentals, food, and entertainment if you’re planning a corporate picnic.

4. Pick a theme.
If you’d like to make the picnic memorable, consider setting a theme. A few options to consider include Mexican, Hawaiian, Classic American, ballpark, tailgate, and carnival. Feel free to reach out to Picnic People for theme recommendations and help with planning the decor.

5. Plan the menu.
When planning the menu, keep your theme in mind. A few picnic staples to consider include salads, BBQ, finger appetizers, refreshing drinks, and fruit.

6. Bring the fun.
The games and entertainment should be centered around your guests’ interests. A few games and activities everyone will enjoy include bingo, lawn games, Frisbee, airbrush tattoos, and watermelon eating contests.
